  • Dr. Davidovitch is an expert at Pelvic Acetabular Osteotomy (PAO or Ganz Osteotomy)

Periacetabular Osteotomy (PAO): Also called Ganz Osteotomy or Bernese Osteotomy, is the primary surgical correction of hip dysplasia. PAO, a hip re-alignment surgery, can correct the underlying mechanical problems of the hip including abnormal tilt of the acetabulum. Pelvic osteotomy surgery corrects developmental dysplasia of the hip involving acetabular dysplasia, subluxation and dislocation (we do not treat dysplasia secondary to neuromuscular disorders).

Hip Arthrotomy: Varying problems of the labral cartilage and femoral head can be corrected with this procedure if you are a candidate. This is often performed at the same time as the PAO.

Osteoplasty: Osteoplasty, performed in conjunction to the PAO, involves re-alignment of the head and upper end of the femur.

Hip Arthroscopy: Arthroscopic hip surgery is typically performed as an outpatient surgery which means no overnight hospital stay. Hip arthroscopy surgery is a minimally invasive surgical technique for treating secondary problems inside the hip. Arthroscopy alone cannot correct the major problems of the abnormal orientation of the acetabular rim in dysplasia though it can be used in conjunction with Periacetabular osteotomy (PAO).

Labrum Repair: Arthroscopic labral hip repair can be performed as part of a hip arthroscopy (a ‘key-hole’ procedure through 3 or 4 small incisions). This hip surgery aims to repair the labrum and the underlying acetabular bone for primary healing of the damaged structure. Development of further degenerative changes of the hip joint (arthritis) may be prevented with this surgical intervention.

Total Hip Replacement (THR): Total hip replacement (THR) refers to replacement of an arthritic joint with an artificial joint. However, most hip dysplasia conditions that are not yet arthritic in patients between the ages of 15 and 40 are candidates for PAO. The NYC orthopedic surgeon, Dr. Roy Davidovitch, performs anterior total hip replacement when arthritis is present. This allows for a rapid recovery. You will be up and walking within hours of surgery and usually home the same day as your hip replacement surgery.  Dr. Davidovitch is the leader in anterior hip replacement surgery in New York and Nationally.

You or your adolescent child may have hip dysplasia if two or more the following symptoms are present:

  • Sensation of hip instability (hip gives way on you)
  • Pain from hip dysplasia frequently occurs in the deep in the front of the groin this is because your hip dysplasia may be caused by labral tears, cartilage damage in the joint, hip flexor muscles
  • The feeling of snapping, popping, or locking (which causes pain)
  • Muscle aches on the side of the hip or in front of the hip
